ABSTRACT
Summary Tragopogon includes two classic examples of recently formed allopolyploid species in North America: T. mirus and miscellus . Older allotetraploids from Eurasia offer ideal taxa for comparing the longer term outcomes allopolyploidy. To help resolve ancestry one these older polyploids, phylogenetic analyses multiple populations allotetraploid castellanus (2 n = 24) its putative diploid parents, crocifolius lamottei , were conducted using sequences nuclear (internal transcribed spacer, ITS ; alcohol dehydrogenase 1A, Adh ) plastid ( trnT‐trnL trnL intron, trnL‐trnF spacer rpl16 intron) loci. Fluorescence situ hybridization FISH genomic GISH used to investigate chromosomal constitution Our data confirm that widely distributed Iberian endemic, are parents this polyploid at least three times. One group is distinct exhibiting pairs rearranged chromosomes. These suggest some variants originate young polyploids (here, an intergenomic translocation) may become fixed populations, contributing novelty lineages. The geographical distributions allopolyploids also complex, with being disjunct or both most closely related parental populations.
