Functional Results and Emotional Acceptance after Scapulectomy for Malignant Shoulder Tumors

ABSTRACT
Objectives To demonstrate the functional results and emotional acceptance after scapulectomy for various malignant shoulder tumors. Methods Eight patients with tumors who had undergone between A pril 2004 M arch 2014 were retrospectively reviewed. They comprised seven men one woman their mean age was 54 years (range, 24–69 years). All diagnosed by pathological examination of biopsy specimens. The metastatic in four cases, having originated from a primary carcinoma liver patient, lung patient kidney two patients. other scapulae, specifically, scapular fibrous histiocytomas, E wing sarcoma soft tissue synovial sarcoma. metastases staged as III , IIB . Six underwent total subtotal scapulectomy. remaining tissues sutured together directly sarcoma, required transfer pedicle latissimus dorsi muscle flap. evaluated clinician using usculoskeletal T umor S ociety ( MSTS ) scoring system. Results average duration follow‐up 22.8 months. Four continuously disease‐free, three developed died disease within 12 months surgery metastasis survived pulmonary nodules. No major complications, including infection or dislocation, occurred during surgery. score 16.3 (54%), which is similar to that previously reported studies There no local tumor recurrences only metastases. These outcomes are those prostheses there fewer complications than treated allografts. 3.6 (72.5%). Conclusions Performing scapulectomies on without allograft reconstruction achieves good low rate complications.
