The physical environment, activity and interaction in residential care facilities for older people: a comparative case study

ABSTRACT
The physical environment is of particular importance for supporting activities and interactions among older people living in residential care facilities ( RCF s) who spend most their time inside the facility. More knowledge needed regarding complex relationships between environmental aspects long‐term care. present study aimed to explore how influences resident at two s by using a mixed‐method approach. Environmental assessments were conducted via Swedish version Sheffield Care Environment Assessment Matrix (S‐ SCEAM ), activities, locations assessed through an adapted Dementia Mapping DCM ). Observed Emotion Rating Scale OERS ) was used assess residents’ affective states. Field notes walk‐along interviews also used. Findings indicate that design influenced interactions. Private apartments dining areas showed high quality both s, whereas overall layout had lower quality. Safety highly supported. Despite general, several factors restricted activities. To optimise people, process must clearly focus on accessible environments provide options residents use facility independently.
