When groups help and when groups harm: Origins, developments, and future directions of the “Social Cure” perspective of group dynamics

ABSTRACT
Abstract A substantial literature supports the important role that social group memberships play in enhancing health. While processes through which constitute a “Social Cure” are becoming increasingly well defined, mechanisms these groups contribute to vulnerability and act as Curse” less understood. We present an overview of Social Cure then go beyond this show how underpinning health benefits membership can also negatively affect individuals their absence. First, we provide early research. describe later research concerning potential identifying with multiple groups, before moving on consider “darker side” by exploring intra‐group dynamics foster Curse processes. Finally, synthesise evidence from both literatures highlight complex interplay between phenomena they influenced intra‐ inter‐group conclude considering areas deem vital for future investigation within discipline.
