ABSTRACT
The clinical diagnosis of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) in dogs is challenging. It was hypothesized that with laboratory abnormalities consistent overt DIC have increased mortality and hence survival could be used to evaluate the performance scoring systems. Four systems were compared clinically ill dogs: International Society Thrombosis Haemostasis (ISTH) score; a previously published veterinary system using in-house reference intervals (RIs) for assays; score modified by use RI values.Retrospective cohort study.University teaching hospital.Eight hundred four client-owned underlying disorders associated DIC.None.Medical records reviewed identify which panel consisting times, D-dimer concentration, antithrombin activity, fibrinogen platelet count had been analyzed. methods then applied, ability these scores predict evaluated. Use institution RIs provided most accurate prognostic assessment. A based on 3 6 parameters 72.7% sensitive 80.9% specific 78.4% cases. rate diagnosed via this method 62.5%, 12.9% not DIC, relative risk nonsurvival 4.84 (95% confidence interval 3.80-6.16).In at-risk an accurately predicted mortality. With further prospective validation, holds promise as diagnostic tool characterization studies practice.
