ABSTRACT
Background and Objectives Efficiency in mitigating HIV transmission risk by transfusion may vary internationally. We compared prevalence incidence blood donors across different jurisdictions relation to those rates the general population differences deferral practices. Materials Methods Data from 2007 2016 were collected Australia, Brazil (São Paulo), Canada, England, France, Italy, Ireland, Japan, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Spain (Basque Country), USA (Vitalant) Wales. For each country/region, number of antibody‐positive donations nucleic acid testing (NAT)‐only‐positive was broken down according first‐time or repeat donor status, along with relevant denominators. Results There is a modest correlation between among population. However, HIV‐positive donors, proxy for incidence, do not correlate Rates Italy Basque Country, where criteria men having sex are less stringent, higher most other jurisdictions. NAT‐only‐positive extremely low differ significantly after adjustment multiple comparisons. Conclusion Donor only weakly associated observed Countries stringent have their population, but remain very low.
