Outcome in 38 dogs surgically treated for hepatic abscessation

ABSTRACT
To report outcomes following surgical treatment of hepatic abscessation in dogs.Retrospective.Thirty-eight dogs.Records from 6 institutions were evaluated for dogs undergoing between 2010 and 2020. Signalment, clinical signs, medical therapy, treatment, postoperative outcome was obtained records. Long-term recorded when possible. Median survival time assessed using the Kaplan-Meier product-limit method.Peritoneal effusion documented 32/38 preoperatively, with septic peritonitis confirmed 21/23 samples. Liver lobectomy most common surgery (27 dogs). A single organism cultured 24/35 dogs, commonly Escherichia coli. Hepatic neoplasia identified 11/36 dogs. Dogs hospitalized a median 5 days (range, 3-17) complications 21 (regurgitation, aspiration pneumonia, pancreatitis commonly). Two died intraoperatively, prior to discharge. surviving discharge 638 days. Of these, 19 lost follow up 301 3-1418) postoperatively 11 291 7-1292) postoperatively. No abscess recurrence noted.Septic sequela abscessation. Perioperative approximately one-third In period, long-term prognosis good.Dogs treated surgically have high risk perioperative but favorable apparent low recurrence.
