ABSTRACT
F18-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)–positron emission tomography (PET) along with computed (CT) is a standard method for assessing brown adipose tissue (BAT) activity. We tested the usefulness of near-infrared time-resolved spectroscopy (NIRTRS) as simple and noninvasive evaluating BAT density (BAT-d) by examining effects some factors known to influence The total hemoglobin concentration parameter BAT-d was evaluated using NIRTRS in supraclavicular region 413 Japanese individuals. associations were analyzed between sex, age, percentages body fat (%BF), visceral (VF), seasonal ambient temperature (AmT) fluctuations. Age associated decreased (P < 0.05). There no sex difference BAT-d, except those their twenties. Multivariate analyses revealed that %BF VF correlated lower AmT (around 4°C or 5°C) 4 6 weeks prior measurement day an increase BAT-d. Our results analogous reported FDG18-PET / CT, indicating NIRTRS. might during after decreases than 5°C.
