ABSTRACT
There is no information about the whistles of rough-toothed dolphins in South Atlantic Ocean. This study characterizes whistle structure free-ranging recorded on Rio de Janeiro coast, southeastern Brazil, and compares it to that same species other regions. A total 340 were analyzed. Constant (N = 115; 33.8%) ascending 99; 29.1%) most common contours. The had their fundamental frequencies between 2.24 13.94 kHz. Whistles without inflection points frequently emitted 255; 75%). Some signals presented breaks or steps contour 97; 28.5%). Whistle duration was short (347 ± 236 ms 89.7% lasted <600 ms). Seventy-eight types found analyzed, 27 (7.9%) these occurred only once. Most unique a particular recording session 43). by Brazil characterized low frequency modulation, duration, number points, breaks. Differences mean values parameters this studies Steno bredanensis, but as localities, above 14 kHz are rare.
