ABSTRACT
ABSTRACT We present data on the genetic diversity and phylogenetic affinities of N 2 -fixing unicellular cyanobacteria in plankton tropical North Atlantic Ocean. Our dinitrogenase gene ( nifH ) sequences grouped together with a group from subtropical Pacific; another Pacific was only distantly related. Most 16S ribosomal DNA our samples were closely allied symbiont diatom Climacodium frauenfeldianum . These findings suggest complex pattern evolutionary ecological divergence among within between ocean basins.
