ABSTRACT Cytolysin A (ClyA) is a newly discovered cytolytic protein of Escherichia coli K-12 that mediates hemolytic phenotype. We show here highly purified ClyA and ClyA-expressing E. were cytotoxic apoptogenic to fresh as well cultured human murine monocytes/macrophages.
