Comprehensive nationwide incidence and prevalence trends of atrial fibrillation in Finland

ABSTRACT
Objective Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a worldwide healthcare challenge owing to population ageing. In this study, we assessed the current trends in incidence and prevalence of AF for first time an unselected, nationwide population. Methods Finnish Anticoagulation Fibrillation gathered comprehensive data including all primary, secondary tertiary visits drug reimbursement from national registers identify patients with incident between 2004 2018 Finland. Incident was defined as new-onset occurring after 2007. Time were calculated stratified by sex age. Results A total 411 387 diagnosis documented Finland during 2004–2018. 2018, 469/100 000 4.1%, respectively. The adult (≥20 years) increased 471/100 2007 604/100 but age-adjusted remained stable. 2.5% 5.2%, higher men than women (5.9% vs 4.6%, p<0.001). age 3194/100 23.4% older 75 years. Conclusions Based on primary care, observed increasing over time. This increase strongly age-dependent age-standardised remaining stable 2007–2018. Trial registration number NCT04645537 .
