ABSTRACT
We present AutoTutor and Affective as examples of innovative 21 st century interactive intelligent systems that promote learning engagement. is an tutoring system helps students compose explanations difficult concepts in Newtonian physics enhances computer literacy critical thinking by interacting with them natural language adaptive dialog moves similar to those human tutors. constructs a cognitive model students' knowledge levels analyzing the text their typed or spoken responses its questions. The used dynamically tailor interaction toward individual zones proximal development. takes individualized instruction human-like interactivity new level automatically detecting responding emotional states addition states. Over 20 controlled experiments comparing ecological experimental controls such reading textbook have consistently yielded improvements approximately one letter grade after brief 30--60-minute interactions. Furthermore, shows even more dramatic than original system, particularly for struggling low domain knowledge. In providing detailed description implementation evaluation AutoTutor, we also discuss exciting technologies motivated AutoTutor-Lite, Operation ARIES, GuruTutor, DeepTutor, MetaTutor, AutoMentor. conclude this article our vision future work on engaging systems.
