As a scoping exercise in the design of our Social Machines Observatory we consider observation "in wild", as illustrated through two scenarios. More than identifying and classifying individual machines, argue that need to study interactions between machines observe them throughout their lifecycle. We suggest purpose may be key notion help identify composed systems, mixed methods will required. This provides basis for later work on how instrument ecosystem.
