ABSTRACT
The rise of increasingly more powerful chatbots offers a new way to collect information through conversational surveys, where chatbot asks open-ended questions, interprets user's free-text responses, and probes answers whenever needed. To investigate the effectiveness limitations such in conducting we conducted field study involving about 600 participants. In this with mostly half participants took typical online survey on Qualtrics other interacted an AI-powered complete survey. Our detailed analysis over 5200 responses revealed that drove significantly higher level participant engagement elicited better quality measured by Gricean Maxims terms their informativeness, relevance, specificity, clarity. Based our results, discuss design implications for creating conduct effective surveys beyond.
