Comparing Different Thermal Runway Triggers for Automotive Lithium-Ion Batteries

ABSTRACT
In order to understand the lithium-ion battery (LIB) failing behavior and prevent failures their consequences, different LIB safety tests, also called abuse have been developed. This paper focuses on thermal runway (TR) triggered by overtemperature, overcharge nail-penetration. It shows setup results of three TR triggers single cells in a custom-made reactor. The investigated cell is state-of-the-art automotive pouch cell. are discussed main categories: behavior, vent gas production composition. findings supposed be valuable for pack designer, car manufacturer testing institutions development future facilities regulations.
