ABSTRACT
Previous studies have shown that a decrease in red cell mass occurs astronauts, and some indicate leukocytosis occurs. A life science module housing young mature rats was flown on shuttle mission Spacelab 3 (SL-3), the results of hematology flight control are presented. Statistically significant increases hematocrit, blood counts, hemoglobin determinations, together with mild neutrophilia lymphopenia, were found animals. No changes bone marrow spleen differentials or erythropoietin determinations. Clonal assays demonstrated an increased erythroid colony formation animal cells at doses 0.02 1.0 U/ml but not 0.20 U/ml. These agree vary from other previously published studies. Erythropoietin clonal performed for first time.
