ABSTRACT
Macrophage secretory products are suspected to participate in the severe lean tissue wasting related chronic illness. The protein metabolic effects of chronic, 7-day cachectin/tumor necrosis factor (cachectin) or interleukin 1 alpha (IL-1 alpha) administration vivo were studied male Wistar rats that 1) freely fed, 2) pair 3) total and calorie starved, 4) twice daily lipopolysaccharide (LPS) administered, 5) cachectin 6) IL-1 administered. LPS, cachectin, produced anorexia; weight loss these groups was comparable respective pair-fed animals. However, accelerated peripheral while preserving liver content, unlike pattern starved animals which proteins relative preservation skeletal muscle observed. decrease content LPS- cytokine-treated associated with coordinate decreases mRNA levels for myofibrillar myosin heavy chain, light actin, 18S 28S subunits ribosomal RNA. We conclude exposure cytokines, can simulate those body changes seen experimental LPS disease markedly differ from redistribution due caloric restriction.
