ABSTRACT
The uptake and metabolism of [3H]docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) esterified at the sn-2 position lysophosphatidylcholine (lysoPC DHA) in unesterified form, both bound to albumin, was studied 20-day-old rats. LysoPC DHA preferentially recovered brain (4-5% injected radioactivity) over form (0.3-0.4%). Conversely, lysoPC taken up less than or same extent as by liver, heart, kidney. In brain, mainly phosphatidylethanolamine whether used, although from phosphatidylcholine after 2.5 min. labeled palmitic, oleic, linoleic, arachidonic acids, not lysophosphatidylcholine, also Only incorporated unsaturated (but saturated) lysoPC, with increasing degree unsaturation fatty moiety. These results strongly suggest that young rat specifically utilizes albumin-lysoPC-containing polyunsaturated acids.
