ABSTRACT
Background: Significant heterogeneity in individual responses to exercise interventions provides an opportunity identify individuals for whom modifications or adjunct therapies may be necessary. Here, we explore of response among people with HIV (PWH) versus without (control). Methods: The Exercise Healthy Aging Study enrolled sedentary older PWH and controls (50-75 years old) a 24-week aerobic resistance program. Responder groups were categorized based on minimally clinically important differences cardiovascular (CV), strength, lean mass (LM) outcomes. Descriptive statistics used examine baseline characteristics the different groups. Results: 32 37 (age 58 ± 6.5 years) enrolled. CV nonresponders more likely have infection, greater comorbidity burden, lower fitness. Strength had burden strength at baseline. Comorbidities similar across LM responder increase inflammatory markers from week 24 compared decreased responders. Conclusion: Lower fitness infection was prevalent those poorer response, suggesting that higher intensity prolonged duration required overcome blunted adaptations particularly PWH. Associations should further explored determine if when blocking inflammation might enhance responses. Trial Registration: ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT02404792.
