ABSTRACT

Abstract
Background: Potential harms of screening mammography include false positive results, such as recall breast imaging or biopsies.

Methods: We recruited women undergoing at Columbia University Medical Center in New York, York. They completed a questionnaire on cancer risk factors and permitted access to their medical records. Breast status was determined using the Gail model family history screener. High defined 5-year invasive ≥1.67% eligible for BRCA genetic testing. False results were (BIRADS score 0, 3, 4, 5) and/or biopsies that did not yield cancer.

Results: From November 2014 October 2015, 2,361 enrolled 2,019 evaluable, whom 76% Hispanic 10% non-Hispanic white. Fewer met high-risk criteria than whites (18.0% vs. 68.1%), but Hispanics more frequently engaged annual (71.9% 60.8%). Higher density (heterogeneously/extremely dense mostly fat/scattered fibroglandular densities) frequent (annual biennial) significantly associated with [odds ratio (OR), 1.64; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.32–2.04 OR, 2.18; CI, 1.70–2.80, respectively].

Conclusions: observed who screened had higher greater results. In addition, despite having lower compared whites.

Impact: Our highlight need risk-stratified potentially minimize mammography. Cancer Epidemiol Biomarkers Prev; 27(4); 446–53. ©2018 AACR.
