Prevalence and factors associated to depression and anxiety among medical students in an inland university in Brazil

ABSTRACT
Medical schools are known to be stressful environments for students and hence medical have been believed experience greater incidences of depression anxiety than the general population or from other specialties. The present study investigates prevalence depressive symptoms together with factors associated them among in a public federal university south Brazil. A descriptive was performed using self-administered questionnaires access socio-demographic, institutional health variables association two scales - Beck’s Depression Inventory (BDI) State-Trait Anxiety (STAI) designed assess symptoms, respectively. research sample consisted 152 subjects. 65.1% (BDI > 9), state-anxiety 98.6% trait-anxiety 97.4% (STAI 33). Among women, 37.8% demonstrated moderate/severe symptoms. High levels were found 44.7% under age 20. In group lowest monthly income, it observed highest distributions high state corresponding 47.4%, 57.9% Students attending 3rd term school had percentage (62.5%) (50%). addition, who both financial aid programs presented percentages at (46.2%), (61.5%) (46.2%). We also correlation between (P = 0.037). conclusion, identified as risk previous diagnosis, search service due psychological being programs, dissatisfaction inadequate help offered by it. For outcome, there is an increased low-income younger students.
