Periodontal and other infections have been suggested as potential risk factors for stroke. This study evaluates periodontal disease tooth loss ischemic stroke. The population consisted of 41 380 men who were free cardiovascular diabetes at baseline. history was assessed by mailed validated questionnaires. During 12 years follow-up, stroke incidence subclassified use medical history, records, imaging reports. Hazard ratios (HRs) adjusted age, amount smoked, obesity, alcohol, exercise, family disease, multivitamin use, vitamin E profession, baseline reported hypertension, hypercholesterolemia. Sex socioeconomic status inherently controlled restriction. Confounding variables updated in the analyses each 2-year follow-up interval. We documented 349 cases during period. Men had < or =24 teeth a higher compared to with > =25 (HR=1.57; 95% CI, 1.24 1.98). There little evidence an increased recent follow-up. A modest association seen between (HR=1.33; 1.03 1.70). Addition dietary model changed HR only slightly. Our results suggest that fewer may be associated
