ABSTRACT
The effect of the ganglioside GM1 on recovery local cerebral glucose metabolism (lCMRgl), kinetics cerebrocortical electrical activity, blood flow and redox state as well histological changes following focal ischemia has been studied in cat. Ischemia was produced by occlusion left middle artery (MCA), (30 mg/kg) injected intravenously at 30 min after MCA or time release occlusion, 120 min. Another group animals were subjected to same ischemic insult, but without treatment, sham-operated treated not cats also studied. both GM1-treated non-treated stroke groups classified into 2 (severe moderate) depending depression electrocortical activity hemisphere ischemia. There a significant increase area animals. Additionally there treatment peripheral territory for lCMRgl moderate group, (p less than .05). This showed decreased accompanied severe damage suggesting that may produce metabolic so maintain normal flow-metabolism couple prevent structural damage. possible mechanism induced is briefly discussed.
