ABSTRACT
The Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study is a prospective investigation of the etiology and natural history atherosclerosis clinical disease four US communities.Noninvasive ultrasonic methods were used to determine mean wall thickness (WT), radius (R), circumferential arterial strain (CAS) left common carotid artery 3,321 white male female study participants between ages 45 64 years. standard deviation Young's elastic modulus (Y) 5-year age groups determined for each sex by combining data with concurrent noninvasive measurements pulse pressure (PP) right brachial using equation Y = (R/WT) x (PP/CAS).Significant (p 0.0001) group differences observed both sexes, value increasing from 701 kPa women 771 men 45-49-year-old 965 983 kPa, respectively, 60-64-year-old group. Significant also WT, WT/R ratio, PP, CAS, PP/CAS ratio sexes. A difference was detected (male greater than female, p 0.0006) only less found, having lumen diameter calculated as 2 (R - WT), 2R all groups. did not differ sexes groups.Knowledge parameters required its determination can provide important insight into structural changes occurring within sex, possibly onset very early disease.
