Incidence and Prognosis of Stroke in the Belluno Province, Italy

ABSTRACT
We sought to register the incidence rate, risk factors, and case-fatality rate of all new cases first-ever-in-a-lifetime stroke in province Beluno, Italy. This study aimed provide an epidemiological survey cerebrovascular disease that could supply investigative objectives support information for regional healthcare facilities planning.We undertook a prospective population-based territory 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th local health units Belluno, area located northeast Italy (population, 211 389).In first year (June 1, 1992, May 31, 1993), 474 first-ever were registered. The crude annual was 2.24/1000 (2.01/1000 men 2.45/1000 women). After adjustment European population, 1.70/1000 per year. pathological diagnosis confirmed by CT scan 89.5% cases. Cerebral infarction accounted 319 cases, while 93 patients suffered primary intracerebral hemorrhage, 12 subarachnoid 50 unknown origin. overall 30-day 33%, mortality within week from onset 23%. recurrence after 1 month 1.9%. month, 46% our functionally independent activities daily living.Our first-year results confirm fairly high central northern findings regarding factors stroke.
