ABSTRACT
Recent evidence suggests that physiological changes in the concentration of endogenous estrogens may influence stroke outcome. The purpose this study was to determine a menstrual cycle-related profile blood flow through carotid arteries and its correlation with estrogen concentration. The velocity cross-sectional area common artery, internal artery (ICA), external (ECA) were measured duplex Doppler sonography throughout cycle 14 healthy women. Concentration plasma 17beta-estradiol, progesterone, hematocrit, hemoglobin, pressure also determined. In follicular phase, increased reach peak on day 14, whereas progesterone remained low. mean end-diastolic velocities ICA average by 15% their base values, along increasing concentrations (r=0.59 0.65, respectively). corresponded concentration. In contrast ICA, ECA decreased from value, reaching minimum luteal phase. just 2% value. lumen stable cycle. Hematocrit, systolic unchanged.Increased correlates substantial augmentation artery. This promotion is caused mainly cerebrovascular resistance consequent "stealing" ECA.
