ABSTRACT
Osteoporosis and stroke share several risk factors, including age, smoking, low physical activity, hypertension. Thus, bone mineral density (BMD) high may be related. We examined the relationship between BMD acute in noninstitutionalized men women aged >/=60 years.Sixty-three patients (33 30 men) 188 control subjects from general population were included. was measured by using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry at both proximal femurs. The measurements of performed 6 days after onset stroke. The femoral neck female 8% lower than (P:=0.007). In men, no difference their controls found. Women with values lowest quartile had a higher highest (OR 4.8), probability value for linear trend over quartiles statistically significant (P:=0.003). OR increased 1.9 per SD (0.13 g/cm(2)) reduction BMD, association remained when analysis adjusted potential confounders.Female, but not male, have controls. Low predict women.
