ABSTRACT
Background: Blood volume assessment is a valuable clinical metric, which can diagnostically be used to assess tissue health, monitor patient rehabilitation, and track the progression of wound healing. Currently there exists several methods flow (MRI, US), but are either limited in cost or portability, may require injection contrast agents. Magnetohydrodynamic voltages (VMHD) induced through blood interactions with an external magnetic field, have been successfully measured using modified ECG recorder software package [1]. We hypothesize that portable device capable measuring VMHD could rapidly quantify changes flow. Objectives: Develop monitoring variations volumes VMHD. Methods: A smartphone-based was developed use proposed [1] extract metric proportional from acquired ECGs (Fig. 1a). were two healthy volunteers, second being trained athlete. carotid artery while presence 0.4T static field generated by neodymium magnet embedded 1b). signal extraction performed isolate voltage magnet. Integrating over yielded [1,2]. Trials at rest elevated heart rate (HR) exercise stress. Results: Induced shown increase baseline during 59% 106% for subject athlete, respectively; resulting 47% difference between athlete 1c). Conclusions: stand-alone quickly assessing custom hardware smartphone technology developed. The ability VMHD-derived demonstrated. Ref: Tse, MRM, 2013. [2] Gregory, JCMR, 2015.
