ABSTRACT
The species of the cosmopolitan sponge genus Mycale occurring in tropical Indo-West Pacific region and adjacent subtropical waters are reviewed taxonomically. Specimens incorporated collections Naturalis Biodiversity Center form basis this comprehensive study, supplemented by (type) specimens borrowed from or examined other institutions. available numbered 351, belonging to 44 species, including 14 new science, (Aegogropila) prognatha sp.nov., (Carmia) amiri fungiaphila monomicrosclera tenuichela tubiporicola tydemani (Mycale) asigmata grandoides sundaminorensis (Naviculina) mascarenensis (Paresperella) sceptroides seychellensis (Zygomycale) sibogae sp.nov. Three indicated designation ‘aff.’, were not definitely assigned known due uncertainty their identity. Kerasemna, previously considered a junior synonym Mycale, was revived as an additional subgenus (Kerasemna). One Desmacella D. lampra De Laubenfels is here reassigned at present undecided. Additionally, reported but represented our briefly characterized discussed. We propose names mauricei nom.nov. for macrochela Burton (junior primary homonym fistulata var. Hentschel) bouryesnaultae fibrosa Boury-Esnault & Van Beveren adhaerens subsp. Koltun).
