ABSTRACT
Deep brain stimulation of the subcallosal cingulate (SCC DBS) has been studied as a potential treatment for severe and refractory major depressive disorder since 2005. The authors used an open-label, long-term follow-up design to examine participants enrolled in clinical trial SCC DBS treatment-resistant depression.Long-term outcome data were collected 28 patients (20 with seven bipolar II disorder; one patient depression subgroup was later reclassified having disorder) receiving 4-8 years.Response remission rates maintained at ≥50% ≥30%, respectively, through years 2-8 period. Three-quarters all met treatment-response criterion more than half their duration participation study, 21% demonstrating continuous response from first year onward. Of participants, 14 completed ≥8 follow-up, 11 ≥4 years, three dropped out before 8 years. procedure itself generally safe well tolerated, there no side effects acute or chronic stimulation. rate medical surgical complications consistent observed studies other indications. There suicides. In >8 observation, most experienced robust sustained antidepressant DBS.
