Seclusion Reduction in Dutch Mental Health Care: Did Hospitals Meet Goals?

ABSTRACT
Objective: In 2006, a goal of reducing seclusion in Dutch hospitals by at least 10% each year was set. More than 100 reduction projects 55 have been conducted, with €35 million funding. This study evaluated the results. Methods: Data (2008 to 2013) were from national register. Multilevel logistic regression examined determinants seclusion. Results: Hospital participation register ranged eight 2008 66 2013, and admissions 11,300 113,290. The average yearly nationwide secluded patients about 9%. Reduction achieved half hospitals. Some saw increased rates. some where decreased, use forced medication increased. Higher rates associated psychotic bipolar disorders, male gender, several ward types. Conclusions: Seclusion decreased significantly, Rates varied widely between For many hospitals, more efforts reduce are needed.
