ABSTRACT
Salivary carbonic anhydrase VI (CA VI) appears to contribute taste function by protecting receptor cells (TRCs) from apoptosis. The serous von Ebner's glands locating in the posterior tongue deliver their saliva into bottom of trenches surrounding TRC-rich circumvallate and foliate papillae. Because these directly immediate vicinity TRCs, we investigated whether CA is secreted glands, using immunochemical techniques. immunohistochemical results showed that present acinar cells, ductal content demilune plus rat lingual mucous glands. More importantly, was also detected buds pores. Western blotting collected orifices human CAs purified confirmed expressed These findings are consistent with hypothesis locally implicated paracrine modulation TRC (J Histochem Cytochem 49:657-662, 2001)
