ABSTRACT
The present research builds theory regarding the consequences of work unit ethnic diversity by advancing a status-based, multilevel model when is likely to constrain performance. In contrast past research, which has largely ignored varying degrees status ascribed members different groups, I propose that most cohesion, and in turn performance, units composed two subgroups are separated large differences (i.e., subgroups; ESS). Furthermore, consistent with evidence contingent on broader social contexts embedded, predict presence community exacerbates detrimental units. Findings from multisource, field-based data set ( N = 743 employees nested within 131 bank branches) support study hypotheses. Implications for practice discussed.
