ABSTRACT
Depression and anxiety are prevalent psychiatric comorbidities that known to have a negative impact on patient's general prognosis. But screening for these potential in hospital's accident emergency department has seldom been undertaken, particularly Saudi Arabia elsewhere the Middle East. The Hospital Anxiety Scale (HADS) extensively used evaluate various clinical settings at all levels of health care services except department. This study therefore aimed assess reliability validity HADS depression among patients hospital Arabia. cross-sectional observational was conducted from January December 2012. participants were 257 adult (aged 16 years above) who presented King Khalid University Hospital, Riyadh, Arabia, met our inclusion criteria. We an Arabic translation HADS. employed factor analysis determine underlying structure instrument assessing validity. found version be acceptable 95 % subjects. Cronbach's alpha coefficient reliability, it indicated significant correlation with both (0.73) (0.77) subscales HADS, thereby supporting instrument. By means analysis, we obtained two-factor solution according two (anxiety depression), observed statistically (r = 0.57; p < 0.0001) between subscales. can effectively as initial depression. It thus great part integrated multidisciplinary care.
