ABSTRACT
Abstract Background The 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15) shows good performance in detecting depression among older persons, but its applicability has not been well studied non-Western oldest-old adults and centenarians. This study aimed to evaluate the psychometric property of GDS-15 a simplified version large representative longevous population China. Methods A total 1624 individuals (786 persons aged from 80 99 years; 838 centenarians 100+ years) participated this study. Home interviews with structured questionnaires were conducted collect sociodemographic data. Depressive symptoms measured using Chinese version. We implemented mixed methods for evaluation GDS-15. Cronbach’s α coefficient item-total correlation coefficients used internal consistency. standard expert consultation was test content validity each item. Multiple factor analyses explore optimal structure measurement invariance. Results 0.745, while two items impaired overall consistency reliability. Nineteen experts rated item provided removal suggestion. Five less removed, 10-item GDS model three-factor proposed as an solution. GDS-10 showed factorial equivalence across age, sex, residence, education multi-group confirmatory analyses. Conclusions original acceptable reliability, known-group validity, concurrent community-dwelling centenarians; however we preliminary evidence indicating that individual related somatic function or social activities may be applicable population. modified can potentially more practical comprehensible instrument screening.
