ABSTRACT
Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) and metabolic syndrome (MS) have been independently related to cardiovascular morbidities, however this association is still controversial. Mexican population has a high prevalence of syndrome, its frequency seems be even higher than expected in patients with PHPT. We retrospectively reviewed the charts that underwent parathyroidectomy for PHPT referral center used criteria from National Cholesterol Educational Program (NCEP)/Adult Treatment Panel III (ATP III) define MS before surgery. compared characteristics between without MS. 60 were analyzed, 77% female 72% had single parathyroid adenoma. was present 59% patients, group significantly older (57 vs. 48 years, p = 0.01) they lower iPTH (115 161 ng/ml, 0.017). Other parameters did not show differences. frequent our diagnosed primary hyperparathyroidism, adverse are common significant differences calcium metabolism non-MS present.
