Behind the scenes of research ethics committee oversight: a qualitative research study with committee chairs in the Middle East and North Africa region

ABSTRACT
Research cites shortcomings and challenges facing research ethics committees in many regions across the world including Arab countries. This paper presents findings from qualitative in-depth interviews with committee (REC) chairs to explore their views on they face work oversight of involving human populations. Virtual were conducted (n = 11) both biomedical and/or social-behavioral six countries, transcribed, coded subject thematic analysis for recurring themes. Two sets themes impede pose concerns quality applications: (1) procedures level such as heavy workload, variations member qualification, impeding bureaucratic procedures, overwork, intersecting socio-cultural values review process; (2) inconsistencies researchers' competence applied methodology revealed by applications. Narratives REC are important shed light experiences issues that not captured surveys, adding body knowledge implications region, low- middle-income countries (LMICs) other parts world. International collaborations could benefit findings.
