Improving the understanding of integrative oncology approaches among hospitalized patients with cancer.

ABSTRACT
e23234 Background: Many integrative oncology (IO) outpatient (OP) cancer care approaches—yoga, acupuncture, massage, physical activity—have demonstrated benefit and are now part of guideline care. We report on a pilot inpatient (IP) IO consultative service aimed at introducing patients families to time when cancer- treatment-related symptoms can be significant. As measure patient-centered care, we assessed patient’s change in perceived understanding, intention promote health, confidence plan for OP follow up. Methods: consultations that assess nutrition, activity, stress were made available the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit Thomas Jefferson University Hospital (TJUH) starting July 2023 as ordered by primary team. Consultations (69) have been conducted an Integrative Medicine Fellow attending Board Certified both Medical Oncology Medicine. The post-IO consultation survey includes 7 questions with 5-point Likert Scale (1 = Do Not Agree, 5 Completely Agree).The was initially offered online link. A paper format developed patient request. Results: total 34 (50%) completed post-consultation survey. Conclusions: Patients expressed greater likelihood focusing wellness through diet, meditation, reduction (76.4%) taking steps their health (87.9%); well improved understanding relationship between nutrition (88.2%) (88.2%). noted more positive view TJUH (84.4%) treatment (81.8%). In addition, only 10% decided not pursue appointment after discharge. These data suggest IP consultation. [Table: see text]
