The evolution and inspiration of Italian typology- and morphology-led planning techniques

ABSTRACT
The typology-and-morphology-led planning techniques have played a prominent role in the conservation and redevelopment of Italian historic centers and cities since the postwar period. This article begins with the discussion of the origin and difference of the Italian typology- and morphology-led planning techniques. Then, it on the one hand takes the plan of Bologna as an example to illustrate how to manage architectural building types to guide planning actions; on the other hand, takes the plans of Urbino, Caltagirone, Schio as cases to illustrate how to define morphological units to manage historic urban landscape. Regarding the present domestic situation of urban conservation, it summarizes the inspirations of such techniques for urban conservation and development in China.
