ABSTRACT
OBJECTIVE: To determine the imaging and cognitive consequences of comorbid depression in multiple sclerosis BACKGROUND: Depression is a common comorbidity sclerosis (MS) impacting quality life, employment status performance. Selective subregional hippocampal atrophy, alterations diurnal cortisol secretion patterns impairment have been reported MS patients with depressive symptoms, similar to idiopathic major disorder (MDD). However, relationship (MSD) MDD has not established. We performed structured interviews, detailed testing high resolution structural MR 4 subject cohorts (MSD, without (MSN), healthy controls (HCC)) contrast MDD. METHODS: A total 105 subjects were enrolled at single center. They underwent full neuropsychological assessment including interview for psychiatric disorders testing. High-resolution brain was collected on 3T scanner. Corrected volumes obtained using an automated algorithm (FIRST). Analysis results adjustment age sex (ANCOVA) percentile test scores. Subregional differences will be explored surface based mapping validated manually segmented volumes. RESULTS: All patient groups MSN, MDD) demonstrated impaired verbal learning as compared (ANCOVA p=0.014) most impaired. Delayed recall (p=0.05) processing speed (p=0.005) MSD versus HCC. Total significantly reduced (p < 0.01) controls. CONCLUSIONS: related associated significant volume loss. These effects share features with, but are distinct from, suggesting that different pathophysiological underpinnings may exist between these forms disorder.
