ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine the utility of University Pennsylvania Smell Identification Test (UPSIT) in predicting Parkinson’s disease (PD) versus non-Parkinson’s (non-PD) final diagnosis by a movement disorder specialist Background: UPSIT is “scratch and sniff” smell test comprised 40 smells designed to detect hyposmia. Severe olfactory dysfunction common early symptom PD but not characteristic other parkinsonian syndromes, rendering potentially useful tool differentiation from non-PD syndromes. Design/Methods: We created patient database including 81 patients who have completed at our academic medical center. Employing logistic regression analyses, we three models, each with different combination independent variables, predict specialist. Our first model utilized percentile as sole variable. second used initial (defined prior administration levodopa challenge). third included both diagnosis. conducted chi-squared goodness-of-fit evaluated contributions variable model’s output, performed ROC (receiver operating characteristic) analysis for model. Results: The model, combined were all statistically significant goodness-of-fit-analyses (p=0.004550365, 9.474786e-07, 5.907252e-08, respectively). Each significantly contributed models. This illustrates models capable accurately Area Under Curve determined analyses first, second, 0.718, 0.754, 0.868, respectively. suggests that improves prediction Conclusions: useful, convenient, low-cost clinical parkinsonism Disclosure: Dr. Pulley has nothing disclose.
