ABSTRACT
Open endotracheal suctioning (ETS), which is performed regularly in mechanically ventilated patients to remove obstructive secretions, can cause an immediate decrease dynamic compliance and expired tidal volume result inadequate or inaccurate sidestream respiratory monitoring, necessitating prolonged periods of stabilization connected metabolic monitors. We investigated the effect open ETS on accuracy oxygen consumption (VO2) carbon dioxide production (VCO2) measurements calculated lung mechanics, quotient, resting energy expenditure children without severe pathology, when using a compact modular monitor (E-COVX) continuously recording patient spirometry gas exchange measurements.Open was clinically indicated 11 for sepsis head injury. A total 2800 pulmonary 1-min were recorded 28 instances 50 consecutive minutes before min after standardized procedure.Pulmonary mechanics indirect calorimetry did not differ between pre- postsuction sets measurements. Pre- VO2, VCO2, airway resistance, compliance, expiratory minute ventilation remained stable from 5 55 tracheal among different ventilatory modes. Average paired differences sequential -0.6%, -1%, -0.1%, -0.3%. Ratio first second (1-25 vs 26-50 measurements) two groups.Pulmonary are influenced uneventful well-sedated patients. The E-COVX able reliably record indices as early at ventilator
