ABSTRACT
OBJECTIVE Monitoring of brain tissue oxygen tension is increasingly being used to monitor patients after severe traumatic injury and guide therapies aimed at maintaining above threshold levels. The new Licox PMO combined temperature catheter (Integra LifeSciences, Plainsboro, NJ) combines measurements in a single probe inserted through bolt mechanism. In this study, we sought evaluate the accuracy under controlled laboratory conditions assess automated card calibration system. We also describe our clinical experience with probe. METHODS Oxygen was measured 2-chambered apparatus different tensions temperatures. system compared manually calibrated Rates hematoma, infection, dislodgement were recorded. RESULTS accurately measures over wide range concentrations physiological temperatures, but it does have small tendency underestimate (mean error, −3.8 ± 3.5%) that more pronounced between temperatures 33 39°C. thermistor has when resistance thermometer −0.67 0.22°C). found introduce some variability Clinical indicates good placement within white matter using improved low rates hematoma (2.9%), infection (0%), (5.9%). conclusion accurate small, consistent under-read higher tends by 0.5 0.8°C across suggesting caution should be temperature-directed treatment strategies. improves upon previous models allowing obviating need for 2 separate probes measure temperature.
