ABSTRACT
<ns3:p><ns3:bold>Background</ns3:bold>: Growth failure due to infection in children is a major health problem throughout the world. It provokes systemic immune response, with increased interleukin (IL)-6 and reduced IL-10. Lactoferrin (Lf) multifunctional iron-binding protein that can be found whey inside formula milk such as oral nutrition supplement (ONS), which upregulate anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-10) modulate pro-inflammatory cytokines. This study investigates effect of Lf supplementation ONS on IL-6 IL-10 levels thrive infection. <ns3:bold>Methods</ns3:bold>: We performed quasi-experimental pre- post-study aged 12–60 months old infectious illness. The subjects received 400 ml nutritional supplements (ONS, 1 equivalent kcal) each day for 90 days, their parents dietary advice medication based underlying Blood was drawn measure before after intervention. <ns3:bold>Results</ns3:bold>: There were 75 recruited divided into group-1 group-2 age. incidence undernutrition 37.33%. intervention improved body weight length. also IL-6, although there not significant difference However, reduction significantly higher compared faltering. Pre-intervention stunting than normal stature. greater change severe stature or stunting. <ns3:bold>Conclusions:</ns3:bold> In addition improving length, response homeostasis by balancing IL-6/IL-10 ratio.
