Determinants of Adoption and Farmers' Preferences for Cassava Varieties in Kabare Territory, Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo

ABSTRACT
Cassava plays a major role in households’ food and income security Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Despite multiple efforts to overcome the problem low productivity cassava production through introduction improved technologies, level adoption such technologies by farmers has remained eastern DRC. This study, therefore, aimed at identifying determinants farmers' preferences for varieties Kabare Territory, A participatory approach was used collect data on 250 smallholder five different zones called “groupements” including Cirunga, Kagabi, Bugorhe, Katana, Mumosho. Results showed that are adopted 28.8% farmers. Membership an agricultural cooperative, access planting material as credit, education level, gender, cropping system had positive influence varieties’ adoption. In contrary, field-to-house distance, location total farm size negative effect decision. study demonstrated introduced possess most traditional desirable traits (yield potential, taste, high disease resistance early maturity) but lacking local (regional) farmers’ leaf production, in-soil storage, bitterness, tuber color which limited who continue relying landraces (88%) those traits. Therefore, addition addressing factors prevent adoption, specific attention should be given breeders if objective is increase
