Risk Factors for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

ABSTRACT
Objective: To study various risk factors previously reported to be associated with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). Design: Case-control study. Setting: Metropolitan Atlanta CFS surveillance registry consisting of physicians and clinics that evaluate patients fatiguing illness. Patients: Twenty-five identified from the Centers for Disease Control Prevention, site, were matched by race, sex, age two randomly selected controls. Cases further subgrouped type illness onset-sudden, occurring within a few days, or gradual, over longer time period. Main outcome measures: A broad panel CFS. Results: significantly more likely than controls report history stress, persistent nasal symptoms, ear infections, ingestion B-complex vitamins during year prior case's onset In addition, women have had hysterectomy. The subset (n = 17) who gradual reporting sudden stressful events in onset, certain dental procedures, sinusitis, exposures herbicides, pesticides, insecticides, We could not confirm associations asthma eczema; exposure sick animals; solvents, paint, other chemicals; raw-milk, travel, occupation, recreational activity. Conclusions: While no effectively distinguish cases controls, data do suggest constitute distinct subclasses syndrome. Future studies should subgroup based on interest, focusing role medical histories.
