Effect of Coconut Shell Powder as Filler on the Mechanical Properties of Coir-polyester Composites

Coir mat was used as reinforcement, polyester resin matrix and coconut shell powder (CSP) filler material which employed 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 100% by weight in the composites.Coir mat/polyester composites were made hand lay-up technique.Mechanical properties such tensile strength (TS), bending (BS), modulus (TM), (BM), elongation at break impact (IS) also investigated.The maximum increase of TS, BS, TM, BM IS found to be 44.44, 128.00, 17.96, 112.09 62.50% respectively for 30% content on composites.It revealed that increased with up weight, however, further value decreased.Gamma radiation 100, 250 300 krad doses applied 40 60% composites.Gamma dose showed better result than other doses.IS improved 48.08, 26.67 17.50% krad, where displayed highest improvement.Degradation tests 50 days performed a soil medium.It BS decreased all composites.
