Hydronephrosis and Urine Retention in Estrogen-Implanted Athymic Nude Mice

ABSTRACT
Subcutaneous estrogen pellet implantation is commonly practiced to induce tumor promotion in nude (Nu- FOXnl nu ) mice for xenograft modeling. Twelve of 23, 18-week-old developed dysuria after implantation. Physical examination revealed variably distended abdomens with palpable bladders. All were euthanatized and postmortem examinations made. Blood samples the collected, serum concentration was measured. Postmortem variable dilation urinary bladder unilateral or bilateral dilations ureters kidneys. Microscopically, 12 23 13 showed dilated hydronephrosis, respectively.
