Photothermal optical modulation of ultra-compact hybrid Si-VO_2 ring resonators

ABSTRACT
We demonstrate photothermally induced optical switching of ultra-compact hybrid Si-VO₂ ring resonators. The devices consist a sub-micron length ~70 nm thick patch phase-changing VO₂ integrated onto silicon resonators as small 1.5 μm in radius. semiconductor-to-metal transition (SMT) is triggered using 532 pump laser, while transmission probed tunable cw laser near 1550 nm. observe modulation greater than 10dB from modest quality-factor (~10³) resonances, well large -1.26 change resonant wavelength Δλ, resulting the dielectric function insulator-to-metal achieved by pumping.
